Remove toolbars from Firefox

If you want to remove unwanted toolbars from Firefox, read trough instructions listed below.

If you only want to hide toolbars:

  • click on View menu.
  • go to Toolbars
  • uncheck toolbars you don’t want to appear

or

  • right click on little search icon by the toolbar
  • uncheck unused toolbars

Completely remove third party toolbars with Add-ons Manager

Most of toolbars are installed as Firefox extensions, which can be removed with Firefox Add-ons Manager.

  • Click on Tools
  • Select Add-ons
  • Click on Extensions tab
  • Find toolbar you want to remove and click on Uninstall button.
  • Restart Firefox

if you can’t uninstall toolbar this way, you can try proccess above in Safe Mode.

Uninstall toolbars via Windows Control Panel

Toolbars are listed as installed programs, so you can remove them same way as other programs. Follow the instructions for uninstalling programs from Windows.

How to clear Firefox search bar history

After some time searh bar history can grow quite large, so it’s good to clear it from time to time. Clearing it is useful if you have some “dirty” searches, you don’t want anyone to see. So how to clear search bar history? Quite simple frankly.

  • Right click somewhere on Search bar in the top right corner of your browser so menu pops up.
  • Select Clear Search History and you are done.

If Clear Search History is greyed out, it means you have no search history in your bar.

How to change keyboard language

If your keyboard have other language than you need, you might not have keys and letters you need for writing. Solution is to set default language for keyboard by following the steps bellow:

  • Click Start and find Control Panel and click it
  • On Control Panel find and click Region and Language if you have icon view or Change keyboards or other input methods (under Clock, Language, and Region) if you have category view
  • Click the Keyboards and Languages tab if you aren’t there yet.
  • Click on Change Keybards button.
  • New window named Text Services and Input Languages will open.
  • Under General tab you will notice Installed services which tells you what input languages you have.
  • If you don’t have desired language listed there click on Add… button (if you do just skip to the next step). New window Add Input Language will open. Find language you want and expand it so you see Keyboard and Other sublist. Expand Keyboard and click on the checkbox with your language. Confirm your setting by clicking OK button. You have added new input language.
  • In the window Text Services and Input Languages under Default input language dropbox find desired language and select it. Confirm by clicking OK button.
  • Confirm again by clicking OK button in Region and Language window.
  • You have set your default language now. You can switch between different input languages by pressing Alt + Shift keys or by clicking on the Language Bar button (bottom right corner – you’ll see language initials there (ex. ENG).

Ventrilo sound delay problem in Windows 7

Problem wiht Ventrilo happens sometimes when playing games. Everything works fine at first but after few minutes user might stop hearing other users and experience delay of speech over Ventrillo.

How to fix delay in Ventrilo

  • Go to Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete and selecting Start Task Manager
  • Go to Processes tab and find button Show Processes from all users and click it.
  • You will now see processes from all users, and even though this don’t make any difference if you are the only users, doing it will make you administrator.
  • Find Ventrilo process and right click it. In menu Set priority select Realtime. If it asks you to save the priority option confirm it with Yes.

Automatic scrolling on laptop issue

Problem:
On some laptop something happens which made all the windows with scrollbar (in all aplications) scroll to the very botom. Even when clicking on scrollbar or scrollin back up, it automaticly scrolls to the botom again. This issue is reported on some Lenovo and Compaq models.

Possible solutions:

  • Restarting computer solves automatic scrolling, but may occur again later.
  • Sometimes it can be cause by stuck key on keyboard. If not on laptop you can try to disconnect it and check it problem goes away.
  • It can be caused by low battery on wireless mouse. Recharge it.
  • Problems with touchpad drivers. Update it.

How to get into Windows Safe Mode

User might need to go to Safe Mode if Windows can’t start normally, so they can bypass normal windows settings and startup programs. Reasons can be fixing computer settings or disabling some nasty trojans or viruses.

To boot in Safe Mode you will have to restart your computer if it is already on. If not turn it on. When booting press and hold F8 to bring up Windows Advanced Options Menu (with some computers you will get stuck key message if you hld F8 – if yours will behave like that, just tap F8 key continously).

There will be one or more Safe Modes:

Windows safe mode

  • Safe Mode – most basic mode which most of users will want
  • Safe Mode with Networking – mode with acces to network and internet, which is handy if you need any drivers or information from internet
  • Safe Mode with Command prompt – mode with access to the command line (MS-DOS prompt)

Select the Safe Mode you want with arrow keys and confirm by pressing Enter on keyboard.

Windows should boot in Safe Mode. You’ll know that you are in Safe Mode by message in the corners of the screen.

When you are done working in Safe Mode, just restart your computer to get back into normal windows mode.

How to map a network drive in Windows 7

Here is the process for mapping network drive in Windows 7.

  • Simply go to Start and click on Computer.
  • Computer - Map network drive
    Open the Tools menu and select Map Network Drive option
  • New window Map Network drive will open.
  • Map network drive window
    Select the drive letter from dropdown.
  • Type the name of the location of the folder to be mapped (in form of //computername/folder) or click on Browse button and locate folder you want to map (confirm with OK).
  • Click on the Finish button.
  • Mapped network drive should now appear under Network locations in Computer.

  • Simply go to Start and click on Computer.
  • Right click on the network drive you would like to remove and select Disconnect from menu.

Google search commands

Google search is a powerfull tool for searching the world wide web. Since not everyone knows what commands can be used in advanced searches here is the list.

Basic google search commands

  • ” “ (quotation marks)
    Exact search for keyphrase.
  • - (minus sign)
    Excludes keyword from your search.
  • + (plus sign)
    Insist on including keyword in search results.
  • ~
    Indicates that you want to include in your search results synonyms of the words.
  • *
    Includes a wildcard match in your search results.
  • OR
    List results which have at least on of keywords

Webaster essential google search commands

  • link:
    Search for websites linking to a website (backlinks)
  • cache:
    Shows the cached snapshot of a page
  • related:
    List the pages Google considers to be related.
  • site:
    Search for results within a website (show indexed pages).
  • info:
    Find specific URL in search database.
  • intitle:
    Keywords must be found in Page Title.
  • inurl:
    Keywords must be in URL.
  • intext:
    Keywords must be found in body text.

Google search for information

  • Stock:
    Show stockmarket information for a given ticker symbol.
  • weather:
    Find weather forecasts for specified location.
  • [#] in [#] (conversion)
    Type unit of measurments instead of [#].

Advanced google search commands

  • [#]…[#]
    Search for a range of numbers as a keywords. [#] is replaced by number value.
  • filetype:
    Find given type of file.
  • safesearch:
    Search excluding adult content.
  • date:
    To certain timeframe restricted search.
  • daterange:
    Restrict search to any date range.

Google search computations

  • [#]% of [#]
    [#] is replaced by number value.
    ex: 14% of 50
  • basic computation functions: + – / *
    Make sure you have no space between numbers and compute signs.
  • ^ (potence sign)
  • sqrt

How to change Firefox language

Perhaps you downloaded wrong version of Firefox and you would like to change it’s language.

In old versions of Firefox this could easily be change in Preferences menu, but unfortunately it no longer works for versions 3.0 and higher. So your only option is reinstalling Firefox.
