Oatmeal recipes are very popular. I guess you're becoming more like me. I wanted to write a whole post about protein oatmeal because if oatmeal has a flaw, it's not usually very high in protein. Add some protein and healthy fat if you think oatmeal doesn't fill you up or if you're hungry an hour after eating it.

How to Make Oatmeal High in Protein

As you probably know, oatmeal doesn't have a lot of protein, so I add a few protein-rich ingredients. I'll talk more about each one below, but here's a quick summary:

  • Protein powder
  • Cottage cheese
  • Greek yogurt
  • Eggs or egg whites
  • Milk
  • Seeds and nuts
  • Nut butter

Protein Powder in Oatmeal

It might seem like only bodybuilders or athletes put protein powder in their oatmeal, but I do it, and I love it! It adds a lot of protein, is easy to do, and can give the oatmeal a delightful taste. The protein powder gives this butter protein oatmeal a chocolate taste. Two wins! Almost any other kind of oatmeal goes well with protein powder.

Add it to nighttime oats or oatmeal made on the stove. About 15-20 g of protein are in 1 scoop of protein powder. Protein powder is also a good choice if you're vegan or don't eat eggs or dairy since you can't eat many easy ways to get protein. I am trying to figure out what protein powder to use? In this post, I talk about my favorite protein powder brands made from plants.

Ingredients

ADD

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats from the old days
  • 1 cup liquid
  • 1/2 sliced banana (optional) pinch of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon + 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, optional
  • One protein powder scoop
  • Your favorite toppings

Instructions

Put oats, slices of banana, and sea salt in a pot. Add water and mix with a spoon. If you want, add cinnamon and vanilla heat for 8 to 10 minutes over medium-high heat or until all the fluid is absorbed. Make sure to stir the oatmeal a few times while cooking so that the banana slices mix in.

The oatmeal is done when all the liquid has been subsumed and the oats are deep and fluffy. Take the oats off the heat and add the protein powder while stirring. If the oats get too thick, you can add some more milk or water. Put the oats in a bowl and top them with the things you like best. I used bananas, peanut butter, and chocolate chips.

Oatmeal with cottage cheese

I feel like people are either in the "I love cottage cheese" camp or the "I hate cottage cheese" camp... Listen to me out about cottage cheese before you decide what to think. In oatmeal, you won't be able to taste the cottage cheese. It adds so much creaminess to oatmeal! Cottage cheese has 25g of protein in 1 cup.

Even though you probably won't mix in the whole cup, still! A lot of protein. Again, any kind of oatmeal can be mixed with cottage cheese. If you don't like the texture of cottage cheese, you can mix it into warm oatmeal so that the "chunks" (for lack of a better word) melt and mix in.

Oatmeal with Egg White

I love eating oatmeal with egg whites in it. I've found that adding egg whites to oatmeal on the stove while it's cooking works best. The key is to keep the egg whites from getting all mixed up. To do this, keep stirring or whisking the egg whites as you add them to the pan and as they cook.

One time I got sidetracked and ended up with scrambled egg white chunks in my oatmeal. Not very good. This is the only way to make high-protein oatmeal with your cooking oats. Don't put raw egg whites in overnight oats, please. About 26 grams of protein are in 1 cup of egg whites. Again, you won't add 1 cup of egg whites, but they have a lot of power.

Oatmeal with Greek yogurt

You can mix cottage cheese or Greek yogurt into your oatmeal to get more protein. I usually choose full-fat and plain because flavored yogurt can have a lot of extra sugar. Greek yogurt is a great addition to hot or cold oatmeal.

There are 17 grams of protein in one small container of Greek yogurt. That's about the same as one scoop of protein powder. I love making overnight oats like these banana bread overnight oats with Greek yogurt.

Butter Oatmeal with Nuts or Seeds

Adding nut or seed butter to oatmeal is another great way to make it more protein-rich. Mix it right into the oats or drizzle it on top for extra flavor. There are about 8g of protein in 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, about 7g in 2 tablespoons of almond butter, and about 6g in 2 tablespoons of sun butter.

Other Ways to Put Protein in Oatmeal

  1. Use milk to prepare food, the oats, instead of liquid or almond milk. Most non-dairy milk doesn't have a lot of protein, but 1 cup of soy milk and 1 cup of skim milk both have about 8 grams of protein.
  2. Add hemp, chia, and flaxseed, which are all high in protein, to your oats.
